BUSINESS: Virgin Active Announces Expansion Plans Into Durban and JHB

Recent Kwazulu-Natal Business News

Virgin Active, South Africa's leading health club operator, today announced at a briefing with Sir Richard Branson, that it plans to open eight new clubs in 2011 including its first in Soweto and a new Classic Club in Durban.

Celebrating its tenth anniversary in South Africa this year, Active is opening its second Classic Club at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban this month. It will follow up in July with its first club in Soweto at the Mopanya Mall.

As part of its latest expansion, Virgin Active will also roll out a Corporate Social Responsibility partnership with the Western Cape Provincial Government later this year. This will introduce a programme that will see dozens of Virgin Active clubs in the region ‘adopting’ local high schools to promote healthy, active lifestyles amongst youth.

Ross Faragher-Thomas, managing director of Virgin Active SA, said the company's scale and resources enable it to tailor its product and provide value and innovation to its growing membership base.

“Our clubs offer our members an experience, not just a work out. The Boulders Virgin Active Club features innovations such as a DJ booth and a boxing ring, while the Classic Clubs feature state of the art equipment, lounge areas fitted with the latest Apple Mac computers and meeting rooms.

“Our expanded range of clubs enable us to cater to a growing potential group of members. We continue to innovate, offer superb service and provide unparalleled value for money to customers who have never been part of a health club before,” added Faragher-Thomas.

Sir Richard Branson said: “The call from Mr. Mandela in 2001 to rescue the Health and Racquets chain prompted our investment and I am glad to say we have not looked back. Virgin Active SA has been one of our best performing companies and we continue to look for opportunities to expand this business and bring its unique style to many more people."
