EXPO: Climate Change Indaba Will Boost Interest in SA Real Estate

Recent Kwazulu-Natal Business News

“South Africa’s position as a destination of choice for major international events continues to provide excellent showcase opportunities for foreign investment in SA real estate,” says Ronald Ennik, CEO of Johannesburg-based Ennik Estates, a specialist marketer of luxury homes.

Focused on the Gauteng market, Ennik Estates is an exclusive affiliate of the worldwide Christie’s International Real Estate organisation.

“The “COP 17” United Nations Convention on Climate Change, which will take place in Durban from 28 November to 9 December, presents a perfect ‘shop window’ opportunity.

“The event will bring to South Africa about 30 000 delegates, partners and journalists from 193 countries – many of whom will go home at least as word-of-mouth ambassadors for South African residential property, and at best as potential investors,” says Ronald.

“This is a process that began in earnest in 2002 when tens of thousands of international visitors converged on Johannesburg for the World Summit on Sustainable Development.

Global Events Promote Interest in SA Real Estate

Since then, South Africa has featured in a few billion homes, lounges, pubs and clubs around the world while hosting subsequent global events – including the IPL Champions League Cricket, the FIFA Confederations Cup and, above all, the FIFA World Cup (the most watched event on the planet).

“In fact, it was the unprecedented international focus on South Africa during the FIFA World Cup that prompted Christie’s to establish a presence in our property market this year,” says Ronald.

Major Awareness Opportunity for SA Real Estate

While COP 17 will clearly present a major awareness opportunity for South African real estate, the process does not end there.

“Already on the calendar of major international events which South Africa will host are the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations (the continent’s premier football event) and the One Young World Summit, a global youth leadership convention that will bring together in Johannesburg some 1 200 delegates from about 170 countries – also in 2013,” says Ronald.

“Home marketers and sellers of SA real estate will continue to capitalise on the extended awareness that South Africa is achieving on the world stage as a result of hosting major events such as these,” he concludes.
